My family has been raving about Appam Aunty for some time. So it was on our “to-do list” when we visited Singapore. And it was a WINNER. Soft and fluffy in the middle and wafer thin and crispy on the outside. We had a few varieties – onde, nasi lemak and kaya and cheese, but my all-time favorite is still the plain appam with orange sugar. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Went on a Monday morning. It was the only stall opened. So you should ta pau from tea or coffee from the Koufu food court before coming to eat at this canteen. The appam is very nice, light and airy. Just abit costly and not filling. – Jenny Kartika

The first time I went to this place during the weekend after seeing a social media post. It is located inside the Republic Polytechnic E Canteen north of Woodland. By the time we visited there, all the other stalls were closed except it and we were so relieved. They have a variety of Appams available and I must say it is top notch quality and taste. As a Sri Lankan, appam (we call it, Aaa-pp-a ආප්ප in Sinhalese ) is one of our favorite foods for breakfast and this was the closest I have seen, well Prepared appam from a non-sri Lankan restaurant. We always eat Appam with chilli sambal, Curry or Jaggery/Sugar. Appam with coconut milk or with Orange color putu mayam Sugar could be a whole new experience. Prices are reasonable as well. Recently dined at Sakunthala’s restaurant and had the pleasure of trying their chicken biryani along with paneer butter masala. The portion size of the biryani was generous, along with 2 pieces of chicken, a boiled egg, flavorful curry, and refreshing raita. The biryani had a balanced taste, not overpowering, just right. Here’s one for you Easties. If you prefer freshly prepared appams, Rajarani Thosai, which is located in the well-known Tampines Round Market, is another place that is quite popular. Here, the center remains gorgeously pillowy while the flawlessly lacey sides are consistently very sharp. The modest S$1.50 dish, which is topped with a good amount of grated coconut and orange palm sugar, is what we would call the ideal breakfast delight.

Located in the round market – among the stalls facing the inside of the market. One of the best thosai I’ve had in Singapore. Soft fluffy and filled with flavourful masala potatoes. Knowing that this is one of the most popular stalls & despite staying in this area for ages, I have not once tried their thosai. Was told by many that they serve one of the best thosai in town. I usually spot long queues at this stall during peak hours & it really depends on your luck as the malasa sometimes runs out as early as 12 but on certain days, it’s available at 1 pm. A single serving comes with a generous portion of well-marinated, flavourful soft potatoes & onion bits wrapped in the thosai. – Kelly Chong

This hawker centre serves the morning crowds and most stalls are closed in the early afternoon around 12.30pm. One of the popular stalls is the Rajarani Thosai which has a good Thosai selection. I tried the plain thosai $2.50 and masala thosai $4 and both were really good. The curry given was very good. The Puttu Mayam with the coconut was good too. – Louise

Heavens Appam is the spot to go for a consistently excellent dish of appam and is undoubtedly one of the most well-known shops in the area. Think of a very rich and sweet coconut milk center that is boosted by the zing from the fermented dough. The long lines are a good indication of its quality. If you’re looking for something heartier, choose the Princess Appam, which comes with delectably melted cheese, some butter, and a fried egg. The traditional side of sugar and shredded coconut is always a nice option.

Hard to find Appam outside of Little India. The appam here is good, will be back to try the egg and cheese appam next time. The putu mayam here is also great. It’s so soft, I believe they made it themselves, unlike many stalls that use factory-made. You can ask for curry if you are not a fan of eating it with sugar. – Daniel Wong
