Established in 1949, we started out as an eating house at 264 Middle Road, David Elias Building. At that time, we served Chinese food (tze char), cakes, pastries, and drinks. In 1975, we began operating as a cafe – L.E. Cafe Confectionery & Pastry, concentrating wholly on cakes and bread. Some of our offerings were Buttercream Cakes, Cream Puffs, Swiss Rolls, Apple Strudel, Chicken Pies, Cheese Sticks etc.

Customers would come in to enjoy their cake and coffee or tea. Sometime in the 1990s, we revamped our business model and converted our bakery/cafe to a takeaway shop. This was also the time when we introduced our “Golf Ball” Pineapple Tarts. In 2000, we added Bean Curd Tarts to our menu. We opened our 2 branches, at Cambridge Road, in 2007 and Veerasamy Road, in 2009. In Nov 2018, we relocated our main shop from our original premises at 264 Middle Road to our current location at  31/33 Mackenzie Road.

The ananas comosus, sometimes known as the “pineapple,” is a South American fruit that was found by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in 1493. Columbus’ observation of the fruit’s scaly skin, which is supposed to resemble pine cones, is said to be the source of the fruit’s common name. Columbus was fascinated by the delectable fruit and brought it back to Europe, where it piqued the interest of European explorers and was distributed to various regions of the world in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Why are pineapple tarts used in Chinese New Year?

During Chinese New Year, serving any type of sweet dessert is encouraged since it symbolizes carrying a sweet life into the new year. Certain fruits are also considered fortunate by the Hokkiens, and pineapple, ong lai in Hokkien dialect, literally means “fortune arrive,” is one of their favorites.

Where did pineapple tarts originate?

Pineapple tarts were invented by the Peranakans, who were the first to do so. They were descended from Chinese immigrants who settled on the Malay peninsula, which included the Dutch East Indies and British Malaya.

How long can pineapple tarts be kept?

Once the pineapple tarts have completely cooled, place them in an airtight container and tightly close them. In a cool, dry place, the tarts will keep for up to 3 weeks. Chill the tarts in airtight containers if you want to make them ahead of time and store them for longer than 2 to 3 weeks.
