Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, is set to undertake an official visit to Singapore from May 6 to May 7, at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. This visit marks a significant diplomatic event as it’s Sultan Ibrahim’s first state visit abroad since assuming the role of Malaysia’s king. His previous visit to Singapore was in 2022 when he held the title of Sultan of Johor.

Sultan Ibrahim ascended to the throne as Malaysia’s 17th king in January, following a legacy that spans over three decades after his father’s reign. Accompanied by Queen Raja Zarith Sofia and Malaysia’s Minister of Transport Anthony Loke, among other senior officials, Sultan Ibrahim will partake in a ceremonial welcome at the Istana on Monday.

President Tharman and his spouse will then host a state banquet in their honor. During his visit, Sultan Ibrahim will engage in separate meetings with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is set to assume the role of Prime Minister on May 15, marking this visit as the last significant diplomatic engagement with Mr. Lee as Prime Minister.

During his upcoming visit, Sultan Ibrahim will be given a tour of the parliament chambers by Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng and will have the opportunity to observe parliamentary proceedings. Furthermore, he is scheduled to visit the Thomson-East Coast Line alongside Singapore’s Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat.

It’s worth noting that during his previous visit to Singapore in 2022, Sultan Ibrahim visited the site of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Woodlands North terminus.
