Singapore’s restaurants have picked up on the trend and have responded with gusto. Chefs in Singapore are increasingly infusing their own artistic flair and interpretation into their dishes, with some even adding a dash of local flavor, making high tea a truly Singaporean experience.

So, if you’re seeking to take a break and relax with a decent cup of tea and some delectable tea-time goodies, here are some of the finest locations to visit.

Throughout my childhood, I was fortunate enough to taste a great variety of teas. At the time, I lived in Morocco and France, two countries that observe two very different tea ceremonies. In Morocco, tea was a universal beverage, a warm gesture of welcome shared and extended to every guest who entered the house. In France, many believed at that time that tea was reserved for the elderly, women, or for the sick. However, I disagreed and believed strongly in an elevated status and positioning for tea, to be enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Upon moving to Paris many years later and working in the tea industry, I began to advocate that the taste of tea be treated with respect and emotion. After poring over the Cha King written by the grand tea master Lu Yu, I began to better understand the myriad varieties of tea and learned to recognize the flavors of each, be it floral, fruity, or spicy.

I came to understand that tea is the expression of art practiced in a unique manner from one region to another and from one country to another. I also began to travel extensively, visiting the tea routes of China, India, and Japan. During those expeditions to tea estates, I discovered the root of my passion for tea.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What is a High Tea Places?

In the mid-1700s, the British custom of High Tea started as a mid-afternoon meal that was normally served between 3 and 4 p.m. Originally, it was a ‘high’ lunch for the working man who ate standing up or seated on tall stools. There would have been tea with cakes, scones, and maybe cheese on toast offered.

What can I expect at high tea?

Light delicacies such as finger sandwiches, petit fours, macaroons, and scones will be served during the tea party. It is, nonetheless, good manners to exercise discipline and avoid consuming too much food. The food at a tea party is light enough that you can talk while having a small snack to keep you going until dinner.

What is the difference between high tea vs afternoon tea?

An afternoon tea, which is served in the middle of the day, is known for its delectable scones, tea sandwiches, and cakes. A high tea, on the other hand, is served in the early evening and contains considerably more substantial meals, such as meat, fish, and egg dishes, as well as bread and sweets.
