What’s our purpose?
Singapore generated more than 168,000 tonnes of textile and leather waste each year. 96% of all textiles go to the dump each year, which is the equivalent of one garbage truck full of clothes being burned or dumped in a landfill every second. Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater – this means more emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
Shocking right?
By extending the life of your clothes by 9 months, you can reduce their carbon, water and landfill footprint by up to 30%. As individual consumers, the single best thing all of us can do for the planet is to keep our stuff in use longer. This simple act of extending the life of our clothes through proper care and repair reduces the need to buy more over time – thereby cutting down the fashion pollution and waste.
The most eco-friendly clothes are the one already in your wardrobe
We live in a culture where replacement is king. While we do routinely fix big-ticket items like cars and refrigerators, but primarily it’s easier and cheaper to go buy new clothes. And there are other unconscious reasons to avoid repair, like labels warning that repairing a product on your own will void the warranty, or the lack of access to the information and parts necessary to repair clothes ourselves, or the misunderstanding of the confusing labels on the clothes.
These conditions create a community of product-consumers, not product-owners. And there are significant differences: Owners take responsibility for their purchases (from proper cleaning to repairing, reusing and sharing), Consumers, on the other hand, take, make, dispose and repeat.
At Cleanly, we believe we all have a role to play to protect our environment. When it comes to buying clothes, we should choose carefully, find the items we really love, and then learn to care for them so that they will last a long time. Like what our founder Joelle Goh said, “The most eco-friendly clothes are the one already in your wardrobe.”

How did it start?
Our story starts with our founders, Joelle and her partner, to begin introducing technology and digital advancement to the dry cleaning and laundry industry. Through introducing free electronic lockers at condominium, free of charge, they enabled their customers to do their dry-cleaning: business shirts, winter jackets, bed sheets etc. at a highly competitive price.
They integrated the utility of an omni-channel digital-offline customer interface, microservices design architecture, proprietary customer relationship management system, factory optimization management and logistics management systems among other enterprise solutions to offer a convenient, easy and high-quality way customers do their dry cleaning and laundry. Started the first location at Icon Village, they are now located at Novena Square Two, and the 24/7 Digital Laundry Lockers at 25 other prime locations including Oceanfront @ Sentosa, Orchard Scotts, The Rise at Oxley and Scotts Square.
With the latest trend of fast fashion and e-commerce shopping experience becoming more common, the founders learnt that many people were buying clothes online without even trying. The new trend of fast fashion culture has also started, and as a result, created much of a textile and leather waste. From the national statistic perspective, the textile waste output in Singapore has increased from 93,000 tonnes in 2008 to 168,000 tonnes in 2019, representing a significant increase of 80.1%
Hence, the founders believe that we can (and should) play a role in assisting all to prolong the lifespan of their clothing, giving extra care to our garments, and to reduce waste.
Buy Less. Make It Last.
Cleanly believes that a big factor that plays into clothing longevity is how it is looked after. Paying attention to the care instructions and washing and drying them probably are keys to making clothing last.
Repairing clothes that have holes, stains, or other signs of wear to make them more useful and beautiful again is True Beauty.
Fixing what’s broken, adjusting your clothes to have the right fit instead of throwing them away, and practising sustainable ways of lifestyle are what we all should o to reduce waste. This is a sustainable practice.
Repair and alter your favourite clothes, and properly clean and dry your clothes using environmentally friendly detergents, combs and brushes.
“Look better in clean clothes that fit.”
