Starting from Monday (Apr 1), red light cameras will be used to identify speeding throughout Singapore will be activated “progressively and dynamically.” Priority will be given to locations that have a higher incidence of accidents or violations.
Red light cameras, strategically positioned at selected road junctions, serve to detect vehicles that violate red light signals.
These cameras are easily identifiable by their prominent orange and white color scheme. Additionally, warning signs displaying speed limits are placed ahead of traffic camera enforcement zones.
As of last December, a total of 252 red light cameras were operational across Singapore.
The decision to activate the speed enforcement function aims to enhance motorist behavior. This action follows a significant 83.3 percent increase in speeding-related fatal accidents in 2023 compared to the previous year, as reported by the police on Saturday. Furthermore, the proportion of fatal accidents attributed to speeding rose from 17.3 percent in 2022 to 25.2 percent in 2023.
The activation of the speed enforcement function was also prompted by speeding violations, as highlighted by the police.
While the number of speeding violations detected by traffic enforcement cameras decreased by 28.6 percent from 73,152 cases in 2022 to 52,237 cases in 2023, there was a notable 22 percent increase in speeding violations detected by police enforcement operations, rising from 52,016 cases in 2022 to 63,468 cases in 2023.
The police emphasized that this trend indicates that motorists still opt to speed in areas they perceive as unmonitored, despite the effectiveness of traffic enforcement cameras in deterring speeding violations.
The Traffic Police (TP) reiterated their call for motorists to refrain from speeding, even in areas without static speed cameras. They emphasized their commitment to taking enforcement action against those who disregard traffic rules, including speeding.
In response to the rise in accidents and fatalities, the Traffic Police (TP) announced that they will adopt a stricter enforcement approach towards reckless road users.
In February, the police stated that they will increase the composition sums and demerit points for specific traffic offences to act as a more potent deterrent against irresponsible drivers. Further details regarding these adjustments will be disclosed later this year.
The police also emphasized that motorists who flout traffic laws risk losing their driving privileges, as their licences may be suspended or revoked.
Errant drivers who engage in violations such as running red lights, speeding, or driving under the influence may face prosecution in court. Moreover, individuals involved in accidents resulting in grievous harm or fatalities may potentially receive imprisonment sentences and driving disqualifications.
