The scheduled destruction of the ballot papers and related documents from the 2023 Presidential Election on March 2 is in accordance with the law and aims to uphold the secrecy of the vote, as emphasized by the Elections Department (ELD). This standard procedure aligns with the commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

The disposal of documents from the September 1, 2023, Presidential Election, including the ballot papers, will take place at the Tuas South Incineration Plant. Stored at the Supreme Court for the past six months, these documents will undergo the scheduled destruction as outlined by the Presidential Elections Act 1991.

The process ensures adherence to legal requirements and emphasizes the importance of maintaining the secrecy and integrity of the electoral process. Candidates or their representatives may opt to witness the proceedings, as communicated by the Elections Department (ELD).

The 2023 Presidential Election in Singapore marked a significant democratic event with over 2.48 million votes cast, representing the nation’s first contested presidential race in 12 years. The election outcome included 50,152 rejected votes, highlighting the active participation of citizens in shaping the country’s leadership through their ballots.

President Tharman Shanmugam, the former Senior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, achieved a resounding triumph in the 2023 Presidential Election, securing an overwhelming 70.4% of the vote. Following him, former GIC chief investment officer Ng Kok Song secured second place with 15.72%, and former NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian received 13.88%. The election results reflect the strong mandate and support President Tharman received from the electorate.
