Public Transportation Transformed into Art Places, the National Arts Council (NAC) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have entered into a three-year cooperation that would convert land transport venues and public transportation commutes into exhibition spaces for Singaporean artists and arts organizations. This is also an attempt to bring more art into areas of public transportation.
“The public showcase will enable artists to reach and grow new audiences through a wider platform. This partnership forms a part of our broader vision to transform Singapore into a distinctive city with many accessible spaces for people to enjoy the arts wherever they are,” says Ms. Low Yen Ling, Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Trade and Industry. “Besides refreshing their journey, the artworks will create a greater appreciation for local talents as commuters enjoy art on the go.”
In celebration of the impending Singapore Art Week (SAW), trains and stations will be transformed into art spaces starting now and continuing through January 28, 2024. Selected pieces from Singapore Art Week will adorn seven rail stations as well as a themed train that travels the North East Line. The artworks will take the shape of murals on the MRT walls and in-carriage activations. This is an overview of the artworks that will be on display throughout SAW for the general audience.
My Mother Says, a wall installation of proverbs from the elderly assembled by 20 people over a three-week workshop, is one of the highlights. Six MRT stations—Bugis (Downtown Line), Bencoolen (Downtown Line), Dhoby Ghaut (North East Line), Little India (Downtown Line), Rochor (Downtown Line), Paya Lebar (Circle Line), and HarbourFront (North East Line)—will allow commuters to view the other artworks.
